Maria Albion and Carley Melbourne
Maria Albion, Karama Primary School Principal, and Carley Melbourne, Senior Teacher are excited to share their school’s preliminary successes working to improve reading pedagogy and students’ reading outcomes at Karama Primary School, Northern Territory. The decision to work with Dr Lorraine Hammond and the Let’s Decode program derived from Maria and Carley acknowledging and analysing current gaps in school-based reading data. Their literature search accounts for the science of reading as it evaluates the Let’s Decode experience at Karama Primary School. Comparisons are made with literature on evidence-based, reading outcomes by student cohorts attending high-performing schools. Maria and Carley present some important insights regarding their teachers’ pedagogic content knowledge in the field of reading. The presentation illustrates what the Let’s Decode program looks like in practice at Karama Primary School, including the positive way that Karama Primary School students are responding to the Let’s Decode program.
